My name is Sheryl Ilene Newcomb. And yes, my initials are S.I.N. A funny little piece of whimsical humor my parents found amusing when I arrived.
Then, it turned out to be true. Looking back with wiser eyes now, my family and I concluded that the events leading up to my transformation started the summer I turned nine. But the day we realized there was a problem, and no turning back, was a week before I started my senior year at Junction City High. The day the fangs and claws appeared and the monster inside of me emerged.
When mutilated corpses appeared near a pile of brush down by Caney Creek, everything changed. Because evil woke up and growled, its ominous rumblings heard by every living thing in Locasia County, Mississippi.

This story was good enough it kept me reading until the end, but it would have benefited greatly from a another heavy editing. While the Southern dialect was occasionally spot-on, not all Southerners speak like uneducated hicks. Having characters who own a successful business speak as if they failed to complete the third grade quickly grew tiresome, as did the the frequent misuse of the word " ya'll. " This is a contraction for "you all", so is obviously plural, and should never be used when referring to a single person. All Southerners know this. I also don't know if any self-respecting Mississippian who would say, "It weren't no...." There were other glaring errors, such as having a character who had never been married, and referred to frequently as Ms., suddenly becoming Mrs.Again, the story itself kept me interested enough to finish. For people who aren't Southerners, and who don't mind errors, this book will probably be great.

Growl eBook Ashley Fontainne Jeff LaFerney Reviews
I am a long time fan of Ms Fontainne's work and her books simply get better and better with each outing. Her latest, Growl, tells the story of a teen age girl Sheryl Newcomb, living in Junction City, Mississippi, She seems a typical small town girl, she has a boyfriend, is a cheerleader and appears to be living a normal life. But one night in her past still haunts her. It occurred when she was nine and something huge and inhuman has found its way into her bedroom intending to kill her.
And it would have succeeded had not a creature named Nahu'ala protected her.
And now, years later she has discovered why. The frightened teen learns that she is a descendent of an ancient tribe called skin-walkers-people able to physically change into monstrous creatures and that the skin-walker who tried to kill her when she was a child is back, and Nahu, ala is no longer able to protect her or her family.
As like Ms Fontainne's other novels, Growl is a real page turner and I especially enjoyed how well she portrays southern life, with their folksy sayings and down-home mannerisms. She makes is all so real-as I can only imagine since I've never been south of Philadelphia.
Growl is a top-notch read that I'm sure you will enjoy.
If you could sum up Growl in three words, what would they be?
Interesting, different, heart touching
What was one of the most memorable moments of Growl?
When Sheryl 1st found out the truth of who she was and her family.
Have you listened to any of Andrea Emmes’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes several. I never stopped being amazing at how she can adapt her voice from a sexy vixen, to a little girl, to more serious characters like she did in beautifully broken. She is amazing to listen to. She is easily on the top list of what will she do next. She has a truly amazing talent.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes I would have liked too.
Any additional comments?
I was amazed at how fast paced the story line was. I felt that I was emotionally all over the place with the characters in the story line. Sheryl goes through so much in the story line. A family member is killed, she is in love, her learns of her family's secrets, she finds herself being transformed because of said secrets. She also has a good verse evil problem she is the only one in the family that can resolve the problem. To say the story line is gripping almost feels like an understatement. I truly felt like the fly on the wall listening to the lives of the main characters developed along.
Kudos's to the author for writing an amazing story to take us to a new world to get lost in for a while.
Who wouldn't be hooked on a book where the main protagonist's initials are SIN? Did her "hippy" parents name her Sheryl Ilene Newcomb in jest or was it a hint of dark things to come? Things from her Native American heritage that had to happen for her to fulfill her destiny?
From the time Sheryl was nine, her family noticed some changes in her, but things escalated when her body started morphing into something else when she was a high-school senior. That's when the fangs and claws appeared and she began emitting growls... increasing in volume as time passed.
In this highly unusual coming-of-age story, author Ashley Fontainne proves again that she is a master in the thriller genre of writing. She takes her readers through Sheryl's transformation slowly and methodically; we learn the secrets from her past just as Sheryl learns them... one at a time. Perfect pacing... Dramatic, realistic description...
Although Sheryl's growls are frightening to her, her family knows much more than they're willing to share in the early stages. Her family members stand with her every step of the way, but deliver up information only as she needs it, allowing her the freedom to choose.
Sheryl is devastated when her greatest ally, her devoted grandmother, passes on... Or did she?
SIN's kitten-like growls are nothing compared to the gruesome sounds that all in Mississippi hear when the real evil awakes and mutilated bodies are found not far from their home.
What does her family know and why do they wait so long to tell her? What is the destiny foretold about her from ancient times? How does her grandmother help...even from the grave? Is Sheryl truly evil or is she chosen to destroy an evil much larger and ghoulish than herself?
You will ask yourselves those questions and many more as you clutch the arms of your chair while reading this book. I can't give you the answers without revealing too much, so you must read for yourself.
This is the most unique shape-shifting story I have ever read; the first to go into such depth of character development. It blew my mind to witness the multitude of emotions and changing consciousness of Sheryl...as expertly seen through this insightful author's "third" eye. Your heart will break for this unfortunate young girl, even though Fontainne weaves a satisfying ending.
I once compared this prolific author to Edgar Alan Poe but, like her SIN character, I believe she has now morphed into a Stephen King or Dean Koontz.
Yes, this book is THAT good. I recommend it highly and think it would make a "screamer" of a movie. I also recommend that you leave your lights on and lock your doors... You are in for the fright of your life.
